ONE POSITIVE I COULD look at was at least I wouldn’t die under a crusty bridge.

My heels crunched on the gravel road and then turned silent as we walked across a field of grass. Owen hadn’t been lying when he said they wanted to go somewhere no one would hear me scream. There wasn’t anything for miles. Not even any street lights.

I slowly made my way across the area, Owen at my back giving me a nudge every once in a while if I was going too slowly. Thankfully, Scarface hadn’t shown up, meaning one less demon to worry about.

The problem was I didn’t know how many more were waiting for me up ahead. I could make out torches set up along the area as we approached. Then the chanting began.

“It’s almost time,” Owen said, eagerness in his voice. “Are you ready for this, Mary?”

I gave him a flat look. Really? He was going to ask me if I was ready to get tortured? I guess even the upper-level demons are stupid sometimes.

Owen laughed. “Don’t worry, you will be. Once the boss gets here.”

“Boss?” I asked confusion on my face. “But I thought you were the boss?”

The other demon stepped in and clapped Owen on the shoulder with a laugh. “This guy? He’s just a lacky like the rest of us. The big man will be here soon and then the real fun begins.”

“Shut up you,” Owen growled shoving the demon away from him and then turned his gaze to me. “It would do for you to keep that mouth of yours closed or it will be worse for you.”

“You mean worse than being raped and killed by a bunch of beef heads?”

His hand whipped up, whacking me on the side of the face. The shock of it knocked me to the ground.

My face stung from where he hit me, and I rubbed at it as I glared up at him. Now that hurt.

“You’ve got a smart mouth on you, it’s going to get you hurt.” Owen reached down and didn’t offer to help me up; instead, he grabbed my arm and jerked me to my feet. Giving me a nasty smile, he almost dragged me toward the torches. “I can’t wait.”

While Owen might be in a hurry to get to business it seemed that the rest of his crew wasn’t. They lounged around on metal chairs that had been set up near the iconic four poster bed in the middle of the area. The torches I had seen before went around the bed in a circle.

The symbols that had been at all the other crime scenes were missing. There was no blood, not even on the sheets that were surprisingly pristine white.

As if reading my mind, Owen said, “You should be lucky we even got a new bed and everything for this. You will be like a goddess being worshiped by her followers.”

“Loved to death, huh?” I muttered, my eyes still on the bed.

“Now you are getting it.” I glanced up at Owen long enough for him to smirk before he was led me to the group of demons.
